The Ultimate Guide to Taking Your Kitchen Measurements

Taking the correct kitchen measurements is essential for your kitchen remodel. Discover our helpful tips for taking kitchen measurements, because a kitchen remodel does not need to be difficult.

While you take your kitchen measurements, it is essential to draw a plan of your kitchen. This will make it a lot easier to find the measurements you need afterwards and could even be helpful when you cannot decide on certain kitchen cabinets in the store.

Start by drawing an outline of your kitchen, this includes doors and windows. When you take the kitchen measurements for your doors and windows, ensure you draw the doorway according to the way it swings open. If this is not done properly, it may cause you problems later.

When taking your kitchen measurements, also include any obstacles in your kitchen. A few examples of obstacles are radiators, pipes and so on. Once you have marked all the obstacles in your kitchen, you can finally begin with taking the actual kitchen measurements.

Start taking measurements by going from the top left corner of the kitchen to the first window, door or wall. Continue taking your kitchen measurements by going clockwise around your kitchen. When taking kitchen measurements, do not forget to record the height of the ceiling. Sometimes it could be necessary to take several ceiling measurements at different locations in your kitchen. Older homes can have irregular roofs, so ensure that all your measurements are completely accurate.

Once you have taken all the basic kitchen measurements, continue by labelling all the windows, doors and walls, it is also a good idea to write down any adjacent rooms because this will give you additional insight later.

Taking your kitchen measurement can also be an ideal time to determine if you will be relocating or adjusting some obstacles, for example radiators. If you would like to keep your existing obstacles, for example because you want to reduce the cost of your new remodel, do not forget to take all the measurements of the obstacles.

Also try to write down all kitchen measurements in centimetres or inches, this will make it a whole lot easier to order kitchen furniture, for example if you would like to buy some new kitchen cabinets or a fridge that has a specific height.

Not everyone needs to take measurements of their entire kitchen, because some people want to order something as basic as a new countertop. If this is the case, best practice is to measure your existing countertop. Take into account any obstacles that may be present around or in your kitchen countertop, for example sink, gas, ventilation and so on. Many countertop manufacturers will allow you to submit your measurements and let you custom-build your new kitchen countertop. This is definitely recommended, especially when the size of your kitchen countertop is quite irregular or if you want a kitchen sink incorporated into your new countertop. Also make sure you write everything in centimetre or inches here, because these are the standard measurements used for kitchen countertops.
